Early Life

In year 1557 of The Sixth Astral area, Ala Mhigo and surrounding regions fell to Garlean control. Among intelligence sold to the Empire by Lambard Calowise were other possible locations of members of the Crimson Duelists. X'anhiel Ndai was a faithful and talented member, but often returned home to care for her two young sons. Once he found the order massacred, X'rhun Tia returned to find the same fate of his tribe. Among the dead was his close friend and fellow duelist, X'anhiel, who had left her sons asleep in their home while she took her rapier to face the invading soldiers. In the night, only X'valax woke to the sounds of fighting, then wandered outside when he couldn't find his mother. In the chaos, a highlander revolutionary on patrol rushed to the sounds of battle, then happened to come across the young boy wandering around alone and rescued him. X'kalax remained in his room, but the home was eventually invaded by Garlean soldiers, who took him and others to potentially be conscripted.Being too young to be sent into Garlemald, he was instead placed in a residential school within Ala Mhigo's city walls, where he was forced to drop the clan letter from his name. Due to the name Kalax sounding too "savage" for his caretakers' taste (also the young boy protesting their mispronunciation), they began calling him "Kalan" instead, which became the only name he remembered for most of his life.As he got older, his lack of skills and strength in combat determined him better suited to being a laborer rather than joining the military. The location and type of labor varied, though all came with abuse. In his adolescence, he was occasionally assigned to the Crania Lupi regiment for various tasks: cleaning, carrying things, sometimes even disposing of bodies.

Ala Mhigo

Later in his life, Kalan met Askold Harjovik, a conscript who often worked under Commander Fordola rem Lupis. While not qualified to join her regiment himself, since he was not born to dignitaries and given honorary citizenship, Askold was still on his way to earning his citizenship through his service to the military. He was known for having a hardened personality and for remaining expressionless in all situations. Despite his reputation, Kalan noticed a particular kindness in his actions. When his own assigned work put him in the Skulls' company, Askold would help with certain tasks or even find easier work for him to do. He also noticed Askold suggesting lighter punishments against Ala Mhigans, under the reasoning of harsher actions "wasting time and resources."It wasn't until Askold defended him from a harsher punishment that their relationship evolved. He volunteered to take care of Kalan himself, then led him somewhere they could speak in private. He served no punishment, only told him to be more careful and warned him about specific members of the regiment to be wary of. Kalan pursued him at this point, though Askold avoided the topic out of fear of putting him in danger. Despite rejecting Kalan at first, he became more protective of him, then eventually allowed himself that happiness. The two were able to keep their relationship secret for some time, until Askold overheard a fellow conscript boasting about what he had done to a civilian. When he realized the man spoke of Kalan, his emotions caught up with him, and he swiftly killed him as punishment. Realizing that this put Kalan's life in further danger, he decided to flee with him. They were caught short of the border, and while Kalan was severely punished, Askold was branded as a traitor to the Empire and killed for it.WIP
